The trivia test below got me to thinking.... I do remember a Shep WOR show in which he discussed how certain smells trigger early memories- think two he mentioned were cutting open a fresh cantelope or watermellon on a hot summer day.
Two that come to me right away: for reasons known only to the 3M Corporation, the adhesive they now commonly use on the frosted Scotch tape used to only be used on the colored tapes they put out for Christmas wrapping.... so that smell instantly makes me think of Christmases as a kid.
And- back in the nether reaches of my medicine chest I have a pristine tube of Brylcream! I'm sure I haven't put any on my head since about 1967; but every now and then when I see it I'll open the cap and take a sniff... Ahhhhh!
In the not-so-obvious, what smells or sounds trigger early memories for you? |

Bad as this seems - the smell of hot ashalt with a hint of gasoline takes me back to the steaming July and August days in Hessville in the 1950's.
Playing ball all day in "sticker stadium" - 169th and Parrish across from the water tower. Civilization ended at Parrish in those days - 169th continued toward Gary hitting the city dumps at Grand with only a few old houses scattered along the way - all on the north side. Woods and sand dunes on the south.
Speaking of triggered memories - the World series has never been the same since the Gillette theme song went away............ |
